Still, there is work to be done even in the most radical of movements. The world of reproductive health activism is still a field dominated by white women. Teaching white women about reproductive justice is not enough; the change will come when the room is full of people of all backgrounds.

Being a doula is a privilege, and the knowledge and experience that have given me my voice are privileges. I’m dedicating my life to uplifting the next daughter who learned first aid from putting Band-Aids on her mom, so that she does not have to see abortions, health care, or activism as unreachable. Learning about reproductive justice has given me a framework for understanding my work and the change I want to make in a way that doesn’t require me to sacrifice my identity.

My presence as an Asian woman has made a difference in the procedure room as well as in the political battlefield. I am from a culture that does not discuss puberty, much less abortion. There is something very powerful about holding space for another woman of color. To have an ideology and be able to contribute to a cause I believe in is empowering. At a time when all that can go wrong might go wrong, all I can do is hope that the hands I’ve held will find the strength to continue and fight as well.
